Master Sergeant Gordon Quilt
I met Master Sergeant Gordon in Maryland a couple of years ago. He saw one of my memory quilts, and asked if I could do one for him. He had gone into the army right out of high school when all other prospects for a career seemed next to impossible. He was lucky enough to be encouraged by a senior officer who told him, “keep your nose clean, and work hard, and you can advance.” He was told that the highest rank he could achieve without his college degree was master sergeant. Drawing himself proudly up to his full height, he said, “I AM a Master Sergeant.” The quilt has shirts representing areas where he was stationed, and he sent me his uniform insignia that I appliqued in the center. The quilt hangs in their stairway so that all can share this remarkable man’s great patriotic dedication and pride in a career that spanned 31 years.
